To most the ongoing theft of various metals through-out the UK will not be news but in one week we learn that two, unidentified scrap metal thieves broke into the hallowed grounds of the power stations to 'lift' some odd bits of copper. Quite clearly they were not local as a change of underwear was required when, in the midst of their activities, they were surrounded by the armed nuclear police! Quite clearly not the act of the honest locals – they don't go in for such activities – or do they? I learnt that during the electrification of Dungeness Estate in the early sixties heavy duty power cables brought to the area by the power companies were heavily encased in lead. As soon as a delivery was made it disappeared. Evidently it made the best weights for the fishing boat nets!!
